Venus Rx in Scorpio: Descent, Desire, and Relationship Truth

On October 3, Venus is stationing retrograde in Scorpio, and this feels like one of those transits that may ask us to be more honest than comfortable.

Venus has to do with love, desire, pleasure, beauty, money, relationships, and what we value. When Venus turns retrograde, these areas of life often come up for review. We may find ourselves reconsidering what we want, what we’re attached to, what we’ve outgrown, or where we’ve been trying to keep the peace at the expense of the truth.

And because this retrograde is happening in Scorpio, the review may not stay on the surface. Scorpio tends to bring us into deeper emotional territory — intimacy, grief, trust, fear, longing, power, and the things we don’t always want to admit out loud.

Not everything that comes up during this retrograde will have an immediate answer. But something may need to be faced, named, grieved, or seen more clearly before anything meaningful can shift.

Transcript (Revised and Expanded)

On October 3rd, Venus goes retrograde in the sign of Scorpio. And shortly after that, on October 24th, Venus will be in the heart of the Sun, exactly conjunct the Sun in the sky.

This is very similar to a New Moon, which happens once every month, right? We have this moment where the Moon disappears from the sky for a few days, and then we have the New Moon, where we are seeding some new information about the lunar cycle. Here, with Venus, we are seeding new information about the 19-month Venus cycle.

Venus cycles have to do with relationships: how we receive love, how we connect with other people, and how we understand what we value. Of course, Venus was also the goddess of beauty, harmony, and diplomacy, you could say. Venus has to do with anything connected to how we connect with other human beings, how we create harmony or negotiate difference, and how we recognize what is beautiful, meaningful, and worthwhile.

And with this Venus cycle in the sign of Scorpio, there may be an intensity about the way in which we work through relationship issues with other folks over the next 19 months.

We are going to get a sense of the meaning of this Venus cycle for us over the next couple of months as we go through the retrograde period. Then Venus turns direct and emerges bright in the morning sky with a message about maybe what we want to do in our life, or how we want to rework or renegotiate relationships in different areas of our life.

What we discover or uncover during that Venus retrograde period will inform the unfolding of that 19-month cycle.

There is a lot to talk about.

I am going to take a deep dive into the myth of Inanna, a Sumerian goddess who represented the planet Venus thousands of years ago. It is an interesting myth, and it will help us get a little bit of a deeper understanding of what the Venus retrograde cycle is about.

Then I will also talk about Scorpio, the sign, and what Venus retrograde can bring up for us personally. Lastly, we will talk about what topic area of your life might be most impacted by this Venus retrograde.

The Astronomy of Venus Retrograde

First, let’s talk about the astronomy of it in very simple terms.

Over the 19-month Venus cycle, Venus comes together with the Sun in two major conjunctions. The one we are focused on here is the inferior conjunction, when Venus is retrograde and closest to the Earth. Right now, we are in the part of the cycle where Venus is moving between Earth and the Sun, coming closer to Earth as she approaches her inferior conjunction with the Sun.

And when Venus gets really close to the Sun, that cazimi, that happens on October 24th. Cazimi means that Venus is in the heart of the Sun. That is the moment when we may get some clarity about what we are working through relationally in this cycle.

Right now, Venus is an evening star. She appears in the night sky. When she is in the night sky, she is kind of beautiful, laid back, introspective, and receptive. Yin, you can think of that feminine Venus energy.

And after the cazimi on October 24th, when she is in the heart of the Sun, she disappears from the sky. Then, a few weeks later, she reemerges as this bright morning star. She is called Morning Star Venus.

And when she is in that state, symbolically and historically, she was interpreted as being the goddess of war. This is not only the sweet, harmonious, pleasing Venus. This is a more active Venus. You could describe it as a yang-active energy, or a social justice energy, or just as Venus being active around getting what she wants in relationships. Maybe she is a little bit more assertive and outgoing around relationships, right?

Right now, we are in evening star place. She is going to disappear. She is going to get a new message around what she is supposed to be working on in relationships. And then she emerges and brings that message out into the world.

That is the next stage of the process.

One of the things I really want to emphasize here is that, typically, we understand Venus and relationships as being all, or often, about the positive side of relationships, or the more feminine side. Meaning having to do with beauty and love and harmony and getting along.

But we do need to understand that half of Venus’s cycle, or part of what she is about, is the actual pursuit of our own value.

Venus has to do with our values. What matters to us. Relationships. Where we deeply connect with another person.

And there can be a process with Venus retrograde of dying to old ideas of what works in relationships and revisiting, reframing, wanting to come up with new agreements, and instituting those new ideas around how we want to work with another person and what really matters to us.

As Venus, as we go through the Venus cycle, as she emerges as a morning star, she is more like: “okay, this is what I want. I have gotten the message during the cazimi moment, when Venus disappeared in the sky. I have gotten the message of what I am supposed to bring out into the world, and now I am willing to implement it.”

You can think of this Venus retrograde period in those terms. It is a time of review, but it is also part of a much larger process of discovering what we value and then eventually acting on that knowledge.

The Myth of Inanna

We can talk about the myth of Inanna. It does a really good job of explicating the deeper meaning of Venus in our life.

I read Sylvia Brinton Perera’s Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women years ago. Perera was a Jungian analyst, working in the tradition of Carl Jung, who was interested in archetypes and the symbolic life of the psyche.

One of the things she explores in the book is the myth of Inanna’s descent into the underworld. This myth is also connected to the Venus cycle itself. You can draw a direct symbolic parallel between what happens to Inanna in the story and what Venus appears to do in the sky: descent, disappearance, transformation, and return.

The Sumerians were observing Venus and telling a story that gave meaning to those visible movements. In that sense, the myth becomes a symbolic map of the Venus cycle.

Perera also reads the myth as a story of female initiation and individuation — a process of psychological growth, descent, stripping away, and return.

I would broaden that out a bit. We all have Venus somewhere in our charts, and we all have Venusian ways of coming to know ourselves more deeply — especially through relationship, desire, beauty, pleasure, and value.

I don’t think there is one path of growth for women and another for men. But I do think there are forms of growth that are specifically Venusian, meaning they happen through relationship. We learn who we are by noticing what we value, what we desire, where our boundaries are, what feels reciprocal, and what no longer feels true.

That can be a real area of growth during a Venus retrograde cycle: learning to name what matters to us, to ask for what we need, and to relate to others from a more honest sense of our own value.

With this myth, we are going to ask questions, or it is going to raise questions, about what we value. What matters to us? Who is worth our time and energy?

Something about this myth stresses themes of stripping out, or stripping away, or letting go of old, worn-out ideas of how we are in relationship with other people. If other people are not valuing us, then we may need to set them aside, or ask that they do their own inner work to grow up around how they are with us in relationship.

And there is also something here about demanding what is just and fair in relationships as well. We are going to see some of those themes in this myth.

I am going to read a very short version of the myth to help ground us in some of these ideas.

In the myth, Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love, beauty, war, and sovereignty, decides to descend into the underworld, which is ruled by her sister.

Before she goes, she puts on all her vestments — I think that is what you call them — all the symbols of her power. She puts on her crown and her jewels, her breastplate, different royal garments, and the signs of her authority.

And she tells her servant that if she does not return, her servant must go and seek help from the gods.

When Inanna reaches the gates of the underworld, she is stopped, and there are seven gates. At each one, she must give up one of these ceremonial adornments that protects her in a way. She must give up the crown at one gate. She must give up her royal scepter at another gate. She gives up these symbols of who she is in the upper world.

Basically, she is being stripped down to the essence of who she is.

Then she is judged by her sister and some other judges, and they end up hanging her. She is naked, and they hang her on what is called a meat hook on the wall for three days. It is basically like a death, like three days on the cross for Christ.

If we think about that symbolically — I am just going to stop for a second — it is similar to the lunar month, where we have the Moon disappear for three days. We can see the symbolism there of death and rebirth that goes with this Venus cycle. Venus, like the Moon, has these moments of disappearance and return, and those periods of invisibility can symbolize an inner process that is not yet ready to be seen.

She hangs on the meat hook for three days. And when Inanna does not return, her servant mourns for her and goes to the gods for help.

Several of the gods refuse, but then the god Enki responds, and he creates two beings and sends them into the underworld with the food and water of life.

The beings reach Inanna’s sister, the goddess of the underworld, who is suffering, and they respond to her with compassion. And because of this, she grants them a gift. She allows them to take Inanna’s body and bring it back to life.

But Inanna cannot leave the underworld freely. She has to bring in a substitute, right? She has to bring somebody else in.

Her sister wants her to give up her servant, but the servant mourned her and cared about her and was lovely. And Inanna is like, uh-uh. No. She is not going to do that.

Then there are other options, but all the options for people she might give up are people who cared about her.

What Inanna ultimately does is she gives up her husband, because she sees her husband and he is sitting on the throne. He is having a good time. He has forgotten about her. And she is like, okay, he can be my substitute in the underworld.

He is forced to go into the underworld as she emerges.

We see here — and there is more to the story — but what we see here are the themes of this Venus retrograde asking us to discern what we value, who we value, who has served us, who cares about us deeply, and who we honor.

And we also see where perhaps people we connect with need their own descent to the underworld. If there is somebody who has not been open and receptive to who we are, and has not valued us, right, then perhaps there is something they need to confront in themselves.

We get this idea of discernment around relationships.

She is going to honor and not ask her servant to be the one who gets put in the underworld, because the servant did good by her and remembered her. But when it comes to her husband — now, you have to think about husband symbolically, right? It is not necessarily her literal husband in our own lives.

He is not awake to who she is. He does not value her. And he goes to the underworld.

We can even think about, I mean, I could riff on this for a second and say, when we are in relationship with another person, if they do not value us, there can be a time when we have to have the hard lesson of separating from them. That does not have to be permanent, but it may wake them up.

Then they end up dealing with their own shadow. They are in the underworld, and they have to process, because of the conflict with us, perhaps the ways in which they have not been honoring us in our life.

And as a result of this whole process of the Venus retrograde, we can have relationships where we are working through conflict with other people and making decisions about what we need. We are being true to ourselves.

Then how does that affect the other person? They have their own work to do in relationship to that.

And then the outcome of that back and forth can be a renegotiated contract, you could say, in the relationship, or a new way of relating to people in our lives. In a healthy relationship, this kind of renegotiation can deepen intimacy, because both people are being asked to become more honest and more awake to what is happening between them.

Now Venus retrogrades, while they are about relationship, do not necessarily have to be about partners. They can be about siblings. They can be about people we work with. They can be about our children. They can be about anybody we have a relationship with.

We can kind of understand which relationships in our life may be getting worked over by looking at what houses of the chart are impacted by the retrograde, and we will talk about that a little bit later.

Key Dates for the Venus Retrograde

I just wanted to give you a couple of the key dates for the retrograde, and then we will talk about, you know, in a deeper way, not just that it is about relationships, but what kind of topics might come up. And that depends on the sign. Here we have Scorpio, and we will talk a bit about the meaning of Scorpio.

The key date is October 3rd, when Venus stations retrograde. Venus has already been in Scorpio for a little while by then, but this is when the retrograde period officially begins.

Then, on October 24th, Venus reaches the cazimi — the moment when she is in the heart of the Sun. Symbolically, this can be understood as a moment of renewal or revelation within the Venus cycle.

Dane Rudhyar described this kind of moment as the emergence of “a new quality of will and purpose.” In the context of Venus, we might understand that as a new sense of direction around love, desire, relationship, and value.

Then early in November is when Venus first begins to appear in the sky in the morning, just faintly. And then by November 14th, when Venus goes direct, Venus is bright, and she is that goddess of war, goddess of desire, goddess of assertion around relationship.

We really see her bringing the message, or the result of this Venus retrograde, out into the world.

Scorpio and the Emotional Intensity of This Retrograde

The sign of Scorpio, where this is happening, is a fixed water sign.

All the water signs have to do with emotions, the way emotions are stored in our body, right? They have to do with connecting with other people, and that is particularly true of Scorpio.

If you think about the first water sign, Cancer, that is the personal water, right? Cancer is about creating safe spaces where things can grow, be nurtured, and thrive. It is ruled by the Moon, so it has this very maternal, protective, and individual quality. It is about me and my emotions—my inner world, my needs, my sense of safety.

When we get to the second water sign, Scorpio, that water becomes relational. The second sign in an element is always more about connection with another person. So Scorpio is not just me and my emotions anymore—it is what happens when my emotional world comes into contact with yours.

And then the third water sign, Pisces, is about the world as a whole, right? It is more collective, more spiritual, more oceanic. Pisces dissolves the boundaries between self and other, and it connects us to something larger.

But when we are talking about Scorpio, there is something much more focused and intense happening. Scorpio is about trying to connect deeply with another human being. It wants to get underneath the surface. It wants to understand what is really going on. It wants to get to the bottom of things.

Scorpio is like the deep water of the ocean floor. It is not the gentle shoreline. It is not the open, boundless sea. It is the dark, pressurized, mysterious place beneath everything—the place where hidden things live.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars, the god of war. So even though it is a water sign, there can be conflict here. There can be heat. There can be passion. Scorpio is an extremely passionate sign, but its passion often moves beneath the surface.

One way to understand Scorpio energy, as Chris Brennan describes on The Astrology Podcast—and I think he does a really good job with this—is to compare Scorpio to the other sign ruled by Mars.

Mars also rules Aries, which is a fire sign and a cardinal sign. Aries is fast, direct, immediate. Mars in Aries is like the prize fighter who gets a knockout in the first round. It is one and done. The anger comes up, it acts, and then it is over.

But Scorpio Mars is different. Scorpio Mars is more like the prize fighter who goes all 15 rounds, gets bloodied up, stays in the fight, and wins in the end.

That is the feeling of fixed water. Fixed emotion. Emotion that holds. Emotion that endures. Scorpio has a persistent quality. It says, I am going to understand this. I am going to stay with this. I am going to get to the root of the problem. I am going to figure out what is blocking real intimacy and connection.

There is a quality with Scorpio of wanting to get close to another person—not casually, but deeply. Scorpio wants to really know someone. It wants to understand what motivates them, what they fear, what they hide, what they desire. And because Scorpio is fixed water, it can sometimes be hesitant to let go once that emotional bond has formed.

There can also be a little bit of an obsessive quality with Scorpio, especially when you combine fixed water with Mars. There is this desire to penetrate beneath the surface psychologically—to get past the polite version of someone and understand what is actually happening underneath. The scorpion has these pincers, and symbolically there is something about that image: wanting to grasp, to pierce, to penetrate, to uncover. Scorpio is a deeply psychological sign.

So if you are with a Scorpio, or if you are dealing with strong Scorpio energy, there can be an intense quality to the way that person tries to understand you. They may not be satisfied with surface-level answers. They want to know who you really are, what is really happening, and how to relate to you from that deeper place.

That is Scorpio energy.

It is intense, right? And in some ways, it can feel like a life-or-death struggle—not always literally, but emotionally. Scorpio tends to bring us into those places where something has to be confronted. Something has to be named. Something has to change.

Scorpio is also the sign that arrives in the Northern Hemisphere in the fall, when the leaves are dying and the natural world is moving into decay. So there is a quality of death and rebirth built into the symbolism of the sign itself. Scorpio understands composting. It understands endings. It understands transformation. It understands that sometimes something old has to die so that something new can eventually become fertile.

So what does that mean for a Venus retrograde?

It means that if we are having conversations with people about relationships, if we are digging deep to understand what is happening between us, it could get intense.

This can be a powerful time for deep psychological conversations about the things we may have been avoiding in a relationship. It can bring up buried feelings, unresolved conflicts, fears around intimacy, trust, attachment, desire, and vulnerability. But it can also create the possibility for real honesty and transformation—if we are willing to stay with what comes up instead of turning away from it.

When Venus retrogrades happen, sometimes people can come back into our life for us to work through relationship dynamics that feel unfinished. You could say unfinished relationship karma. You may find old loves, old partners, old business associates, maybe kids that you have been estranged from or working on stuff with — all of a sudden they are in your life more. They are there to work through and try to get a deeper understanding of whatever relational dynamics are happening.

And because it is a Venus retrograde, it is calling on all of us to strip ourselves bare, in the sense of letting go of any pretense around what we think the relationship should look like.

It asks us to dig to our core, our heart, to get a really deep understanding of what we value and what we want in a relationship. And it asks us to be willing to risk vulnerability and disclosure for the sake of connecting in that deep Scorpionic way with another person.

Scorpio does not want the surface-level answer. Scorpio wants to know what is really happening underneath. With Venus retrograde in Scorpio, the work may be less about keeping things pleasant and more about being honest enough to transform the relationship.

I keep tapping this necklace because I have to point out that it represents the Venus star point. Over time, as Venus repeatedly returns to the same relationship with the Sun from our perspective on Earth, her path traces a five-pointed pattern in the sky. When those points are connected, they create a beautiful rose-like design—often called the Rose of Venus. That’s what this necklace is based on.

The Five of Cups and the First Decan of Scorpio

And we can go even a little bit deeper by looking at the tarot card that is associated with the first 10 degrees of the zodiac, where Venus is going retrograde and where she is going to be in the heart of the Sun.

That is Scorpio 1, the first decan of Scorpio, and it is associated with the Five of Cups.

Fives in tarot, and in numerology and Kabbalah, have to do with sometimes dynamic, difficult change, you could say. It is the card that comes after the four. Fours are always about a sort of contained structure that feels a little heavy, and then the fives break out of that.

The number five is associated with creativity. It is also associated with Venus. The fifth house in the astrology chart is the house where Venus has her joy, and it is all about creativity and pleasure.

And with the Five of Cups, we see here that this is a moment of encountering a sense of loss or grief. We see a figure who looks really sad. Three cups have fallen before the figure. Two cups remain standing behind.

But the person has to turn around to appreciate what remains after a loss.

We could find that, with this particular Venus retrograde, there is a certain grief or mourning that comes with bringing up stuff that may be a little bit more difficult to talk about in our relationships.

If we grieve and let go, or allow ourselves to be fully present in that moment and honor our values, that Venusian part of ourselves, the heart wisdom of the moment, then a new beginning is possible around the relationships in our life that have to do with, or that might come up for, a sort of renegotiation or revisiting during this particular retrograde.

The Five of Cups does not mean everything is lost. It points to the need to acknowledge what has been lost, what has been disappointing, or what has not worked. But it also reminds us that something remains. There are still two cups standing. There is still life after the grief, and there may be a more honest form of love or connection available after we face what is true.

Which House in Your Chart Is Affected

Now, the house in your chart that is most directly affected by this Venus retrograde depends on your rising sign.

If you know your rising sign, you can look at which house Scorpio falls in. That house shows the area of life where Venus is sitting during the retrograde, and where you may be reviewing questions around relationship, desire, value, pleasure, beauty, money, harmony, conflict, and renegotiation.

Scorpio Rising

If you are a Scorpio rising, this retrograde is happening in your first house, because your ascendant is your first house. The first house has to do with you: your body, vitality, appearance, temperament, identity, and how you move through the world. Venus retrograde here may bring up questions around who you are becoming, how others experience you, what you want, and whether your relationships allow you to be fully yourself.

Libra Rising

If you are a Libra rising, this retrograde is happening in your second house. The second house has to do with livelihood, income, possessions, money, resources, and the material support that sustains your life. Venus retrograde here may ask you to reassess what you value, how you earn, how you spend, and whether your financial or material life reflects what truly matters to you.

Virgo Rising

If you are a Virgo rising, this retrograde is happening in your third house. The third house has to do with siblings, relatives, neighbors, short journeys, messages, writing, speech, learning, and your immediate environment. Venus retrograde here may bring up important conversations, especially with siblings, extended family, neighbors, or people in your day-to-day world. It may also ask you to rethink how you communicate your needs, desires, and boundaries.

Leo Rising

If you are a Leo rising, this retrograde is happening in your fourth house. The fourth house has to do with home, family, parents, ancestry, land, property, roots, and the foundations of life. Venus retrograde here may bring up family dynamics, living situations, property matters, or questions around belonging and emotional security. You may be revisiting old patterns around love, loyalty, attachment, or conflict within the family system.

Cancer Rising

If you are a Cancer rising, this retrograde is happening in your fifth house. The fifth house has to do with children, pregnancy, pleasure, sex, recreation, creativity, gifts, festivities, and enjoyment. Venus retrograde here may ask you to reconsider what brings you joy, how you experience pleasure, and whether your romantic or creative life feels honest and alive. It may also bring review around children, dating, sexuality, or creative projects.

Gemini Rising

If you are a Gemini rising, this retrograde is happening in your sixth house. The sixth house has to do with illness, labor, employees or coworkers, service, difficult duties, small animals, and the everyday work required to maintain life. Venus retrograde here may bring up work relationships, health routines, obligations, or issues around labor and care. It may ask you to reconsider what you are giving, what is being asked of you, and whether certain duties or work dynamics are sustainable.

Taurus Rising

If you are a Taurus rising, this retrograde is happening in your seventh house. The seventh house has to do with marriage, committed partnership, business partners, clients, contracts, open opponents, and one-on-one relationships. This is one of the most direct placements for relationship review. Venus retrograde here may bring up questions around commitment, attraction, reciprocity, conflict, repair, and whether your closest relationships are rooted in honesty and mutual respect.

Aries Rising

If you are an Aries rising, this retrograde is happening in your eighth house. The eighth house has to do with other people’s money, shared resources, debts, taxes, inheritances, loans, and matters connected with loss or death. Venus retrograde here may ask you to revisit financial entanglements, shared assets, debts, inheritances, or the resources you share with another person. It may also bring up questions around what you owe, what is owed to you, and whether an exchange is fair.

Pisces Rising

If you are a Pisces rising, this retrograde is happening in your ninth house. The ninth house has to do with religion, philosophy, astrology, divination, higher learning, teachers, long journeys, foreign places, law, and the search for wisdom. Venus retrograde here may bring review around beliefs, teachers, studies, spiritual commitments, legal matters, publishing, travel, or long-distance relationships. It may ask whether your values are aligned with the larger story or worldview you are living inside.

Aquarius Rising

If you are an Aquarius rising, this retrograde is happening in your tenth house. The tenth house has to do with career, vocation, reputation, rank, honors, authority, public role, and the work you are known for in the world. Venus retrograde here may bring review around professional relationships, visibility, status, or the direction of your work. It may ask whether your ambitions are aligned with your values, and whether important professional agreements need to be revisited.

Capricorn Rising

If you are a Capricorn rising, this retrograde is happening in your eleventh house. The eleventh house has to do with friends, allies, benefactors, patrons, groups, networks, hopes, and good fortune. Venus retrograde here may bring review around friendships, communities, patrons, clients, or the people who support your aspirations. It may ask which alliances are genuinely beneficial and which social ties no longer share your values.

Sagittarius Rising

If you are a Sagittarius rising, this retrograde is happening in your twelfth house. The twelfth house has to do with hidden enemies, isolation, retreat, confinement, exile, sorrow, large animals, and things that operate outside ordinary visibility. Venus retrograde here may bring hidden relational dynamics to the surface, including private grief, secret attachments, unconscious patterns, or relationships that have been operating behind the scenes. It may also call for solitude, retreat, or spiritual processing around love, loss, and value.

So that gives you the house where Venus is sitting during the retrograde. But this is only one part of the story.

I particularly recommend working with someone who practices traditional or Hellenistic astrology, because they will go deeper than just identifying the house where Venus is transiting. This retrograde will affect more than that.

For example, if you are a Scorpio rising, Venus retrograde is happening in your first house, because Scorpio is your first house. So yes, it is affecting first house topics: your body, identity, vitality, appearance, and how you move through the world.

But Venus also rules Taurus and Libra, so the houses with Taurus and Libra on them will also be activated.

For a Scorpio rising, Taurus is the seventh house. The seventh house has to do with partnership, marriage, committed relationships, clients, and one-on-one dynamics. So this Venus retrograde may affect not only the Scorpio rising person directly, but also their committed relationships and partnerships.
